Since its inception in 1952, the House of Givenchy has stood at the forefront of haute couture, renowned for its timeless elegance and innovative designs. Founded by the legendary Hubert de Givenchy, the brand quickly captivated the fashion world, drawing attention from icons like Audrey Hepburn. Together, they created some of the most unforgettable fashion moments, including the little black dress in "Breakfast at Tiffany's." As the fashion house evolved, so did its accessories, with Givenchy jewellery becoming a symbol of sophistication and luxury across decades.

Givenchy have always been known for producing timelessly chic jewellery as seen throughout the 70s and 80s, meaning the pieces from these eras are now highly sought after and collectable.

A Legacy of Elegance and Innovation

Hubert de Givenchy founded the House of Givenchy at 8 Rue Alfred de Vigny in Paris, and quickly made a mark with his debut collection, "Les Séparables." Known for their versatility and classic appeal, these designs, including the famous Bettina Blouse, garnered instant acclaim. Givenchy's unique blend of timeless elegance and modern innovation set the tone for the brand's future.

Audrey Hepburn was not only a muse but also a close friend of Hubert de Givenchy. Her enduring partnership with the designer led to some of the most iconic fashion moments in cinematic history. Hepburn's grace and Givenchy's designs created a synergy that remains unparalleled, immortalising pieces like the little black dress.

The Launch of Givenchy Jewellery in the 1970s

The 1970s marked a significant expansion for Givenchy as the house ventured into accessories and jewellery. In 1975, Hubert de Givenchy revived the brand's jewellery collection with bold and luxurious designs that became instantly popular among the fashion elite. This era saw the introduction of long snake chains, modernist pendants, and enamelled earrings, which perfectly complemented the flowing maxi dresses of the time. The period from 1977 to 1981 is particularly notable, with pieces from this era being highly collectible today for their impeccable quality and design.

The 1980s were characterised by big fashion statements, and Givenchy jewellery was no exception. This decade saw the introduction of a range of bold, gold jewellery designed to accompany the brand's fashion line. Oversized clip-ons emblazoned with the iconic 4G logo, shiny bib necklaces, chunky chains, and wide cuffs became the armour for power-dressing women. These pieces were designed to stand out and make a statement, reflecting the era's penchant for glamour and extravagance.

Simplified Elegance: Givenchy Jewellery in the 1990s

As fashion trends shifted in the early 90s towards more pared-back, tonal looks, Givenchy adapted with cleaner lines, simpler shapes, and more silver in their jewellery designs. This era saw a move away from the bold excesses of the 80s, embracing a more minimalist aesthetic. Despite these changes, the brand's commitment to elegance and quality remained steadfast, ensuring that Givenchy jewellery continued to be a staple for fashionable women around the world.

Collecting Vintage Givenchy Jewellery

Givenchy's vintage jewellery pieces from the 70s, 80s, and 90s are now highly collectible. Their timeless chic and quality craftsmanship make them enduring favourites. When collecting vintage Givenchy, here are some tips to ensure authenticity and quality:

  1. Signature Logo: Look for the designer stamp. Pieces from 1975-1980 will be dated, while 80s and 90s pieces will often feature "Givenchy," "GIVENCHY Paris," or "Givenchy Paris New York."
  2. Quality Materials: Vintage Givenchy jewellery is known for its high-quality plating and materials, which age well and resist tarnishing.
  3. Clasps and Fastenings: Authentic pieces have well-constructed clasps and fastenings, often featuring the Givenchy logo or name.
  4. Condition: Genuine vintage pieces should show signs of wear consistent with their age but should be in good overall condition with minimal damage.
  5. Provenance: When possible, research the provenance of a piece, including previous owners and original purchase details.

Signature Elements and Materials

Givenchy jewellery is renowned for its premium materials and distinctive design elements. Common materials include:

  • Gold-plated metal
  • Pearls and faux pearls
  • Cubic Zirconia
  • Swarovski crystals and rhinestones
  • Amber
  • Paste/glass
  • Lucite
  • Enamel
  • Wood

Key design features often seen in Givenchy pieces are the 4G logo and the double G clasp. The 4G logo, combining the initials of Hubert de Givenchy, appears frequently as pendants, charms, or focal points. The double G clasp, featuring interlocking Gs, serves both as a secure fastening and a branding element.

For over 60 years, Givenchy has remained one of the world's most iconic fashion houses, with its jewellery becoming a wardrobe staple for fashionable, independent women. The bold designs of the 80s and 90s are as relevant today as ever, making vintage Givenchy jewellery highly sought after and collectible. With a commitment to elegance, quality, and refined beauty, the legacy of Hubert de Givenchy continues to inspire contemporary designers and fashion enthusiasts alike.

Make sure it’s authentic Vintage Givenchy

  1. Signature Logo: Look out for a designer stamp. Any jewellery from 1975-1980 will be dated. In the 80s and 90s you will see the logo or the word “Givenchy" in many different guises. Genuine Givenchy jewellery usually features the brand's logo or signature, either as a pendant or engraved on the back of the piece. The most common engravings include "Givenchy," "GIVENCHY Paris," or "Givenchy Paris New York."

  2. Quality Materials: Givenchy is known for using high-quality materials in its jewellery. I tend to find that 70s and early 80s Givenchy jewellery doesn't tarnish very easily because the plating was such good quality.  The worst culprits for tarnishing are the silver pieces made in the early 90s - they can oxidise very easily. This can be removed, but it always best to keep these pieces airtight wrapped in acid free tissue. The materials should feel substantial and well-crafted, with a smooth finish and consistent colouring.

  3. Clasps and Fastenings: Authentic Givenchy pieces typically have well-constructed clasps and fastenings. These components should function smoothly and securely, and may also feature the Givenchy logo or name. Some pieces may not be signed if they came as part of a set, but you should still see familiar characteristics such as cross hatching on the reverse of the piece. Often, necklaces and bracelets in the 70s and early 80s featured the double G clasp, less so in later designs.

  4. Time Period: Vintage Givenchy jewellery can be dated to specific eras based on the design, materials used, and logo variations.

  5. Condition: Genuine Givenchy vintage jewellery should show signs of wear consistent with its age. However, the overall condition should be good, with minimal damage or missing components. Authentic pieces should not show signs of sloppy repairs or alterations.

  6. Provenance: When possible, research the provenance of a Givenchy vintage jewellery piece. This may include information on previous owners, the original purchase date, or any accompanying documentation or packaging. Provenance can help confirm authenticity and provide valuable context for the item.
