Veruschka was born Countess Vera Gottliebe Anna Gräfin von Lehndorff-Steinort on May 14, 1939, in Königsberg, East Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia). After the war, Veruschka's family fled to West Germany, where she spent much of her childhood.
